The Internet Buzz on the upcoming Trollbeads Price Increase

describe the image

I know it's hard to hear but by now most Trollbeads collectors know there is a price increase coming on January 27th. This is true but the fact is 2/3rds of the line has remained the same. Unfortunately since the beginning of business, as we know it, price increases are a fact of life.  When an increase happens, no matter the business, it sparks anger and disappoval from all those who will be affected by it.  As in past price increases with Trollbeads this increase has set the fans complaining and asking why and while some of it is negative and not productive, it is very good to ask why. In the age of the internet we are given tools to create a dialog with the people at the head of companies we would not normally be able to easily communicate with. So I am suggesting if you keep your comments to more of an inquisitive nature you may in fact get some answers.  I don't know anything more than you do on this increase but I am guessing if an insult is a part of your comment I don't think it's should get a response but that is just my opinion.

One comment I thought deserved some attention was made by an astute collector who pointed out that Pandora raised prices and has lost a lot of business and Trollbeads should pay attention to their competitors and reconsider the price increase.  This is a constructive comment and I understand the source.  I have been very fortunate this year to become close enough to observe some of the management of the company and I can assure you that they have adept skills at monitoring the market in respect to the bead/charm segment and know fully who they are within it.  A lot of consideration goes into any decision and the price increase is no exception. It's a very challenging and disruptive thing to decide upon but to maintain the business at the present level of quality I am sure it was a decision they had to make.  As for the Pandora situation I know through reading articles and business papers published internationally that Pandora's problems go a lot deeper than any price increase can take the blame for.  Pandora is owned by a international multi-conglomerate that makes decisions based on what the board and investors want.  Their IPO in Denmark was presented on facts and numbers not quite accurate and the stock has reached the lowest ever and has hurt all of the initial investors.  In contrast Trollbeads is privately owned and the owners are the decision makers armed with industry and financial knowledge not many other small companies possess.  Owners are always much more responsible to their customers where in contrast the conglomerates or publicly held companies such as Pandora all decisions are based with the profit for the stock holders in mind.

Many other comments on this price increase mention the current price of silver being down over last year's price but it is not to see the prices see below. The price of raw metals is an important factor but just one of many costs incurred to create, produce and market a product. Running a jewelry line today is like walking a tight rope never knowing what the market is going to do and there was a time when raw goods were more stable as was pricing. I personally know how the cost of doing business has increased straight across the board and more so in the last 10 years than ever before.  Year after year I watch as bank charges have increased, the cost of offering payment by credit cards has skyrocketed, insurance costs which include health, casualty, autos, disability have all gone through the roof and this is just the obvious costs. For example our disposal costs for our retail stores have increased to over double what they were 6 years ago. These mounting costs go right down the line from management to the distributing companies to the representatives and finally to the store.

Silver per ounce

Oct 2010: 23

Oct 2011: 32

Jan 2012: 29

And gold:

Oct 2010: 1350

Oct 2011: 1680

Jan 2012: 1610

In processing all of the factors that goes into pricing I think we can consider the path taken by Trollbeads to be the lesser of two evils.  Increase prices and continue on the same successful path or stay at the same prices and end up having to lower the quality or the size of the beads or the production.  In the end we know it is your choice to buy Trollbeads just as it is the choice of Trollbeads to risk losing some of its collectors in order to stay true to its mantra and true to a large portion of its collectors.

Well said, negativity really only hurts those putting it forth. A hard lesson to learn actually. I prefer the quality to be maintained. I appreciate the integrity of the family and think well of them. They got where they are doing it right, they are not about to abandon that.

A clear discussion of the price increase issue, Louise. Maybe I just really want to believe this, but I get a sense that this company is run with integrity. Also, I am well aware of the fact that buying Trollbeads is my choice. Even if I am completely addicted :) !

Louise, thank you for presenting the logistics of the price increase from a retailer's standpoint. We, as collectors/consumers often don't stop to think of what you are faced with each time the prices are increased. We often only see the forest....and don't realize that the individual trees are not the only ones suffering. Your insight has definitely broadened my thinking...and I'm sure that applies to others also. However...the bottom line is that this hurts us all. You are right, though...as long as dealers find a way to continue to promote the product...collectors will find a way to purchase the product.

I am so disappointed by another price increase. It is difficult in this economy to afford yourself the luxuries that bring such joy as Trollbeads do.It appears that we keep getting hit by one increase after another, just too many . One can only wonder why this is so necessary so often . Help us keep our Trollbeads joy by keeping prices steady for a longer period of time PLEASE .thankyou sincerely Eugenia Nowicki

Louise, yours is such a thoughtful and comprehensive essay on on this eternally hot topic, and you have addressed all levels of consideration--raw materials; art; business, both TB's and yours. As I read your post, I couldn't help but think you really should not have to "defend" this most recent (or any) price increase. I cannot think of a single area of goods or services that does NOT increase regularly over time. While it is never something we welcome, rising prices are universal and inevitable, a fact of life. Like Maddy, I feel reasonably assured that this company operates with a considerable degree of integrity--at least as far as any of us can know (and, Louise, your openness with us certainly nurtures that feeling). We all have to spend according to our individual budgets, but if my own budget says I'm spending too much (it always does!), I will not be taking that complaint to the Trollbeads company. They have provided me with nothing but joy (not to mention a group of treasured new friends). I will continue to support them as my wallet allows, and as long as I continue to believe they're fulfilling that lovely mantra up above.

Thanks for the update Louise! As always, you help us to understand all the issues involved and though I'm not happy with another price increase, at least it helps me to understand better, all the 'why's' involved. Hugs, Marci

All of the points identified deserve consideration. However, it's also worth considering that retail bead prices are going up while the silver market prices have actually gone down and the actual amount of silver in the recent beads is greatly diminished.

It's understandable that Trollbeads may want to maximize their profit but the fact remains that consumers are getting less and less for the marginal money left for luxury items like jewelry. Retailers, meanwhile, may feel they need to justify the price increase to maintain customer trust. But it's retailers who could apply the pressure that would make Trollbeads think twice and then a third time before they make such a consumer-adverse decision.

Personally, I wish I could continue to acquire interesting new things but I also have sufficient beads for a number of bracelets. I will be restricting my purchases to glass until metal prices are more customer friendly.

Unfortunately companies are used to a certain profit level and wish to maintain it. However, I wold like troll to take a step back and hold off on the price increase. At this rate of price increases, the folks that can afford them will decrease and those who have collected for years and have been loyal customers will decrease. A little more effort and consideration would be appreciated.

Price increases are always frustrating! It's important to keep in mind that even if the price of materials decreases in a given year, those materials were likely purchased months or years previous. The company doesn't have the luxury of purchasing when the prices are low - they have to purchase when needed.

I started out as a Pandora fan. I still am, to an extent. But after about the 4th price increase in 2 years (HUGE increases, I might add), it quickly lost it's appeal. Some of their beads have nearly doubled in price in two years! Troll's increases have been MUCH more reasonable.

I will have to be more selective about my Trollbead purchases due to the increase, but that's not entirely bad!

Price increases are never welcomed by anyone ... consumers, retailers or manufacturers alike. But thanks to Louise's insight, we can understand some of the contributing factors. I would much rather see Trollbeads quality maintained, than be compromised just so I could buy more of an inferior product. For me, it's quality over quantity.
